Cambridge University Press, London, New York. Atmospheric Processes 39 3 Atmospheric Processes Atmosphere is the most dynamic part of the terrestrial environment. It is driven by the energy received from the sun. Almost all weather phenomena mentioned in Chapter 2 result from the differences in the amount of solar energy received and utilization thereof.

G > gd, the air parcel is warmer and less dense than the environmental air. Hence, the air parcel will rise further. This shows that when the atmospheric lapse rate (g) is greater than the dry adiabatic lapse rate (gd), the atmosphere is said to be in a state of unstable equilibrium. , g < gd, the disturbed air parcel will be cooler and denser than the environmental air. Hence the air parcel will sink back to the original level. This shows that when the atmospheric lapse rate (g) is less than the dry adiabatic lapse rate (gd), the atmosphere is said to be in a state of stable conditions.

The unit of heat is the gram calorie. It is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by 1°C. 2 COMPRESSION AND EXPANSION OF A GAS Gases like solids and liquids expand on heating. But there is an important difference in the behavior of gases as compared to solids and liquids, when the effect of pressure on their volumes is considered. While solids and liquids are practically incompressible, the effect of pressure on the volume of gases is very marked. For example, when compressed at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas is halved on doubling the pressure and becomes one third when the pressure is made three fold.
