This book by Charles Lee Martin was the last of the quartet and has become one of the rarest. Personally I know of but one copy of the original, and that is in the Library of Congress. For some reason all but one of these four books were published anonymously. Perhaps it was because they were written during the life of Bass and his followers and there was some fear of retaliation, but more likely it was because the writers were too proud to have their names associated with that of an outlaw. In those days the paper-backed books about outlaws were classed with the "penny dreadfuls" forbidden to youngsters and read in secret by adults.

We may wonder why interest continues undiminished in this Texas bandit, whose criminal career lasted only sixteen monthsthat of Jesse James, by comparison, ran on for sixteen years. For one thing, Bass had a song written about him, and celebration in popular music is often a ticket to immortality. But, like other members of the Western outlaw pantheonFrank and Jesse James, Black Bart, Billy the Kid, John Ringo, and Belle StarrSam Bass had the right kind of name, a short, blunt, Anglo-Saxon name that in itself seems to conjure up images of bandanna-masked bandits and evokes the sound of pounding hooves and the smell of saddle leather and gunsmoke.
