Her sister reads a book. Alice tries to interest herself in her sister’s book, but she soon turns away because it contains no pictures or conversations. Because words are abstract representations, Alice refuses to make the effort to connect the abstractions with more concrete pictures using her own imagination. Instead, she considers making a daisy chain, but she remains idle while wondering whether it would be worth the effort to collect daisies. At this point in the story, the reader assumes that Alice falls asleep and dreams the adventures that follow.

At last the Mouse, who seemed to be a person of authority among them, called out, “Sit down, all of you, and listen to me! ” They all sat down at once, in a large ring, with the Mouse in the middle. Alice kept her eyes anxiously fixed on it, for she felt sure she would catch a bad cold if she did not get dry very soon.

Alice notices a small glass box underneath the table. Inside the small box is a cake with the words “EAT ME” spelled out by currants. As she begins to eat the cake, Alice places her hand on her head to see if she is growing. As usual when eating cake, Alice remains the same size. It seems “quite dull and stupid” to return to the common ways of life, she observes, presumptuously assuming that, by definition, always anticipating unexpected events negates their unexpectedness.
