But although difﬁculties in interpersonal relationships may remain a component of autism, this is not necessarily the same thing as a lack of empathy; nor does it signal such a condition, unless we are to deﬁne empathy narrowly to exclude various ways of trying to understand and (apparently) empathize, or even sympathize, with others. ” Although my short critique is intended primarily as a preliminary sketch of one aspect of a complex issue, it does offer certain observations—most notably that the idea of empathy is ideologically loaded and culturally shaped, and so is its inverse relationship with autism.
However, such reservations do not enter into Rifkin’s account, because autism is not central to his argument. In his formulation, autistic people are simply a convenient contrast group used to assert the existence and the importance of empathy: his people with autism are without empathy so that we can see how important empathy truly is. Empathy has truly come of age in the realm of realpolitik. Not only is it being deﬁned as the capacity to understand the experiences of others but increasingly it is being presented as a means of using this understanding to direct the behaviors of the object of empathy.
