You may have experienced retrograde motion yourself if you have ever been in a car with a manual transmission. Such cars can drift backward slightly when driving uphill from a stoplight. As the driver engages the transmission, the car drifts backward (because the driver took his or her foot off of the brake); nearby objects appear to drift forward slightly, then stop, and finally appear to drift backward again once the car is accelerating.

The idea is to use computers and the Internet to allow astronomers and the public access to stored astronomical data without having to use a telescope. Because there is no “real” observatory, only astronomical data, it is called a virtual observatory. S. observatory will ul- timately include the resources and data of astronomers worldwide, when it may have to be renamed the International Virtual Observatory. This virtual observatory will make it far easier to compare objects in different catalogs, which can lead to new scientific knowledge.
